Exclusive: Southeast Drought In Motion

While the drought continues to diminish,  I have spent the last couple of nights working on this motion chart to show how each state was affected by the drought. Here are the basics about the chart:

  • Size of circle is based on each State's Population.
  • Color of circle indicates State.
  • One axis is the percent of the area of the State that isn't in a drought (Example, if 100% - No portions of the state are in a drought).
  • The other axis is the percent of the area of the State in greater than a Severe Drought (Example, if 100% - All portions of the state are in a greater than a Severe Drought).
  • Data is from April 17, 2007 - April 29, 2008.
Play around with the graph below. Hit play or you can individually step through each time series. I hope this isn't too much data overload, but I think it is an appealling way to show a whole year's worth of drought data.  North Carolina really has the biggest change (follow its circle and you will see).
